Grace Dashnaw is a multi-disciplinary artist known and loved in the Ithaca area, currently based out of Los Angeles. Those of us fortunate to have seen Grace perform in Ithaca know them from collaborations with current (and former) local heavyweights Skeleton Hands, Delaques, Keir Neuringer, Chris Corsano, Flose or performing under their solo harsh loop-based project, Wraith. Now a CalArts graduate with an MFA in Composition and Experimental Sound Practices and a concentration in Integrated Media, Gracehas begun to record and release work just as inspiring as the impressions they left in upstate NY.
'Writhe' is a collection of bite-sized pieces, sonically varied but cohesive. Much of the album is anchored by Grace's signature instrument, the cello, but with subtle and tasteful bits of synthesis and effects. These wistful compositions are coupled alongside a raw and textural live recording, showing the full spectrum of their work. Throughout 'Writhe' there is both the sound of reflection and a perpetual motion forward. As a fragment of the accompanying text reads, "Sometimes I have to remind myself, I know how to move." If Writhe is any indicator of what direction Grace is moving, the path appears well lit.
