A sole acoustic guitar. The fingerpicking starts gently but soon picks up slightly in speed and intensity. A melodic theme is introduced, a theme that reoccurs in different shapes and variations. The alternative tuning of the guitar is melancholic and beautiful but it’s not tuned to perfection. The playing is explorative, searching but confident and focussed. The sound is crisp and clear; we can hear every detail, every intention and every little ‘mistake’. Like we’re right there in the room, like a fly on the wall, witnessing an intimate private session.
‘Als de nachtwind die fluistert door de spichtige halmen der duingras’ (Like the Night Wind That Whispers Through the Spindly Culms of the Dune Grass) is the second solo album by Dutch guitarist Marijn Filius. It follows after a handful of ep’s, self-released on digital formats, throughout 2024 and 2025. The album is a culmination of the modes of guitar playing he has been exploring these last few years and his most substantial release since his debut album from 2021.
The archaic title and artwork suggest a fascination with times long gone by or maybe rather an ‘out of time’ sensibility. And while the playing is certainly inspired by both well known names and obscure artists in American Primitive and global folk music, Marijn Filius is an artist with both feet placed firmly in the now. In his own words ‘inspired by the ever evolving movements of time and place and learning through experience’ and with help from the edit work of Michiel Klein, he has produced an impressive document showcasing his off-the-cuff guitar playing. Improvisations in the form of two suites of highly memorable and re-playable instant compositions.
