A truly great modern freak release here from the Berlin trio of Franz (who runs the fantastic Kashual Plastik), David (who releases some of my favourite records as Nein Rodere) and a fellow who I unfortunately have not had the chance to meet and can not find any biographical information about online. However, I have no doubts of his personal and/or musical credentials. Edit: his name is Timu :)
Strangely, on the same Troth tour I met Gustav (of Incipientium), I separately met Fraz and David in different countries. It sure is odd how things can turn out huh.
Anyway, despite being an ‘experimental band’, there is a belied sense of musicality wafting about Primitive Structures. The two opening tracks have a kind of abando jazz club, ciggie-smoke ambience in them. Similarly, a track like ‘Spirit of Seattle’ is not only spectral in name, but almost feels like it could be an afterglow (or embryonic pre-emission) of a Nein Rodere song. Here, Roeder's unmistakeable dulcet tone is joined by a cast of like-minded apparitions in a slow, ritual-pop dance.
Other tracks are more alpha in their unsettling intent, but mostly Primitive Structures suggest a subtle shuffle between the planes. Talk, Talk Garden Of Eden is a confounding and thrilling spectacle to observe, but not one everyone can comfortably step into (or out of).
